The Haudenosaunee Confederacy
was founded 500 years before the United
States.
In 1754 Benjamin Franklin attended a meeting of the Haudenosaunee Grand
Council. So impressed
was Franklin with this form of government, that in 1776 he proposed their
system of self rule to the new Continental Congress. Unfortunately, the Congress didn't include
"The Great Law" of the Peacemaker:
"In all your acts,
self interest shall be cast away.
Look and listen for the welfare of the whole people
and have always in view, not only the present,
but also the coming generations,
the unborn of the Future Nation."
