Bloomberg News
discriminates against Native Journalists
Tara Belford
Bloomberg News
Tara,
I am shocked that Bloomberg News would respond to the
Native American Journalists Association request for convention
support with the claim that Bloomberg representatives heard
at last years convention in San Diego that Indians
are not interested in business writing, (as stated in
your recent email to me) therefore, Bloomberg will not be participating
in this years convention.
I propose that your recruiters may have heard one or two
Native Americans
express a disinterest in business writing. Like other racial
groups of
people, our population holds a diversity of opinion. Dismissing
an entire
organization and race of people as potential employees seems
excessive and
displays a shockingly narrow vision in approaching recruitment
of people of
color. Surely Bloomberg can do better than that.
Sincere committment to increasing the numbers of Native
American journalists in the business writing field requires
a bit more effort than passively sitting at a recuiting booth
at a single event. We have offered Bloomberg personnel an opportunity
to be directly involved with convention workshops relating to
business writing and build a relationship with our members and
send the important message that this is indeed a field open
to them. Unfortunately, Bloomberg has dismissed us.
