This 17"X24" four color process poster quotes the Great Law of theHaudenosaunee Confederacy (Iroquois). The five united nations of the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Mohawk had forged a sucessful representative democracy that was nearly 500 years old by the time of first contact. In 1754 Benjamin Franklin visited the Grand Council of the Confederacy in order to study this unique democratic form of government.

The Constitution of the Haudeosaunee became the model for that of the United States of America, as well as every other representative democracy since. We, the indigenous people of this continent have an important stake and responsibility in guiding this government so that it does not wander far from the ideals of its true beginning. We do not want the "Great Law", which is a preamble, to be forgotten. It reads as follows:

"In all your acts, self interest shall be cast away, look and listen for the welfare of the whole people. And have always in view, not only the present, but also the coming generations, the unborn of the Future Nation."

These are some of the thoughts and values we hope to preserve and teach at ShadowBird.

PowWows, SweatLodge, Retreat, Crafts, Education and Understanding are all part of the spirit of this place. We hope you will help us build it.
